Huntsville Museum of Art

Owner: The City of Huntsville

Cost: $5,500,000
Completion Date: 1998

The Board of Directors of the Huntsville Museum of Art hired Bill Peters to design a new facility to be located within the Big Spring Park in downtown Huntsville.  The project required a demolition plan for the Huntsville Senior Center and the below-grade remnants of the old city pool and recreation complex requiring a very challenging site preparation plan.  The new museum building features 50,000 square feet of galleries, classrooms, administrative offices and a grand hall for entertaining complete with a catering kitchen.  The project required the coordinated efforts of fourteen separate consultants who specialized in museum design and security.   Inspired by classic temple forms, this elegant, minimally detailed, stucco structure is striking, to be sure, yet doesn’t compete with the art inside.
